by Jeremy Samples Magnificent trees…an amazing waterfall…light echoes from a red giant (not a 70’s rock album)…the rise of the machines…the Tetons…a fire-truck baptistry…and Steve Harvey introduces Jesus. I think I’m going to make it one of my goals to see these trees in person before I die—the ones that aren’t in a secret location anyway. If you’re wondering about the last part of the previous sentence, the locations of some of these trees are kept secret to keep them safe from vandalism. Sad. And while we’re at it, “The Most Amazing Waterfall in the World.” Light echoes from a red giant. (Note: Not the title of a 1970’s rock album.) The rise of the machines—the beginning? (Note: I’m kidding…mostly.) According to new research, “Intelligent teenagers often listen to heavy metal music to cope with the pressures associated with being talented.” Interesting. If I didn’t live in Macon, Georgia, I would live near the Grand Tetons—rugged and beautiful. And the Tetons are cool, too. So here is the story of a preacher who secretly sold the church he worked at and used the money to buy himself a BMW—and then bragged about it on his blog. Just wrong. In a thousand ways, wrong. The church in question is still dealing with the consequences, legal and emotional. One parishioner said it this way, “Most of the congregation, being a good Christian congregation, has forgiven him. But there are still things happening to the church that we can’t understand.” Don’t believe everything you see! Recently, a friend told me about a church with a fire-truck shaped baptistry that shoots confetti whenever a child is baptized. I thought they might be exaggerating until I read this article. My friend didn’t even mention the sirens. It sounds like Church E. Cheese to me. What’s wrong with being ordinary? And finally, Steve Harvey introduces Jesus. Comments? Questions? The links are intended to help groups learn, do Bible study, provide fodder for discussion, keep up with some of the happenings around the web, or just make you laugh. I’ll let you decide which links are which. I have tried to verify that these sites are safe and working. If you find any links that aren’t safe or active, let us know and we’ll delete or fix them. |
